Happy Halloween! An October Unit

Bats & Birds

Our class started by researching bats. We read the book Zipping, Zapping, Zooming Bats during Guided Reading. We then began to research information during computer rotations and literacy about bats through exploration of books and the web pages below.

At the end of the week, we had enough information about bats to create a bat's fact sheet (attached).

On Thursday and Friday, we read books about birds. We used our knowledge of bats and birds to then compare the two with a Venn Diagram.

During week 2, we read the book Stellaluna. We are now going to put our knowledge of bats and birds to the test. Our job is to help Stellaluna. She's confused about whether she's a bat or bird. We wrote a letter to Stellaluna as a class. a letter to the

Story Elements (Leo Lionni & The Mixed-Up Chamleon)

Our finished products! The Mixed-Up Chameleon

After working on our matrix as a class, we created our own matrix with The Mixed Up Chameleon. I found the template and lesson ideas from Two Peas Learning!

Our class read the books Inch by Inch and Swimmy. We first discussed the characters, setting, problem, solution and ending. Then, we broke into small groups and colored illustrations to complete our matrix. Visit my teachers pay teachers store for the complete activity! Enoy

Open House

Download this FREE template from Teachers Pay Teachers

FREE Student Information Card

As the students entered the room, I ask them, "How are you getting home on the first day of school?" After answering (or asking thier parents), they moved their blue clip to their correct form of transportation (picture below).

I placed all of my parent information packet in a folder. After completing, parents turned in the folder. After open house, I organized and sorted all of the papers by student.

I don't know about you, but I have daily transportation changes. I LOVE this idea, students move their clip to their correct transportation for that day.

Pinterest Inspired Classroom

The frames were purchased at Michaels from $1.00. It's a fun, colored coded way to post standards.

These projects were done using scrapbook paper and our school library's dye cuts.

Happy Birthday!

Everyone LOVES birthdays (especially kids). Before school starts, have these special treats ready. The vase and styrophome circle are from Micheals. I used labels to make the "Happy Birthday." I used dye cuts from our school library to cut out red and blue circles. Lastly, I taped the circles to Tootsie Pops. I then stuck the suckers in the styromphome ball.
